Hearing Loss Causes

Hearing is precious. It is one of our most enjoyed – and undervalued, until we suffer its loss – senses. Who doesn’t love the joy of music or speech? That aside, without the ability to hear, especially if we have had the sense of hearing for all our lives and then lose it, life can become very difficult live.

Hearing Loss Causes – What Are They?

Let’s begin with news from the University of Florida. There, researchers, along with University of Wisconsin scientists and others from three separate institutions, found that a particular protein plays a role in directing oxidative stress (the damage caused by oxidation) toward the body’s cells. As a result of this oxidative stress, hearing loss can occur. What the findings of the study suggest to us is that the use of supplement-based antioxidants – and/or consumption of foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, fresh veggies, and “superfoods” may aid in preventing, or even treating the loss of hearing in adults. Here at Remedies For Tinnitus Now, we advocate a healthy lifestyle, diet and the use of natural therapies to promote healthy ear function; this study corroborates what we think highly of.

Noise. Just like tinnitus, hearing loss can be caused or worsened by acute or chronic exposure to loud noise. Loud noise exposure, particularly that of a chronic nature, can be insidious; for, if we are accustomed to it (it’s something we find ourselves in every day), we may no longer consider it loud, for our ears may say, “This is normal,” and we make no move to protect them.

(Not) so funny story: I was once in a VERY loud downtown nightclub. The bass was so strong it was distorting the midrange and the treble of the music. I was chatting with (more like shouting into the ear) of one of the security guards. ”You’re here night after night!”, I hollered. ”Don’t your ears get fatigued from all the noise?!”

“No!”, he shouted back. ”I kind of got used to it, you know?!”

When he said that he “got used to it”, it almost certainly meant that he’d damaged his hearing, and therefore, perceived the noise as quieter than it was.

Out of all the hearing loss causes, exposure to loud noise is one of the most common; it causes the hair cells on the cochlea to become less sensitive. It’s part of a category called “Sensorineural Causes”; these causes result from the damage to the auditory hairs in our ears, or the acoustic nerves which transmit signals from the hairs to the brain, which “decodes” them into sound.

Other causes in this category include:

Head Trauma: Fracturing the temporal bones may cause an auditory system disruption

Pressure Trauma (also known as “Barotrauma”): This rapid pressure change is normally found among divers

Drugs: Certain “oxotoxic” drugs may cause damage to the nerves that play a role in hearing – typically in large doses, but occasionally with lower, normal doses. Such drugs include Diuretics, Cancer Drugs, Antibiotics, Salicylates and NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories)

There are also “Conductive Causes”, which are from physical problems with the way that sound waves travel into and through the ear canal to the inner processing centers.

Impacted or obstructed ear canals, blocked with excess wax or debris

Eardrum trauma (medically known as a “perforated tympanic membrane), which is caused by physical trauma, such as an explosion injury, a severe middle ear infection, or hitting the ear drum with a finger or cotton swab (do not go deeply into the ear with hard objects to clean it!)

An ossicle that has been dislocated, due to physical trauma to the ear

An infection of the ear canal

Many infections can cause hearing loss.

Measles

Mumps

Influenza

Herpes, Simplex and Zoster

Mononucleosis

Meningitis

Syphilis

As you can see, hearing loss causes are diverse, so the best things that you can do are to keep your body and immune system healthy, protect your ears from loud noise, and avoid head trauma.

Custom Ear Plugs

I’m sure most of us have experience with earplugs – most commonly, cheap, foam drugstore earplugs that muffle everything and stick out of your ears in a rather alarming looking manner…

But fear not – custom ear plugs exist, and they excel both in performance and comfort.

What are custom ear plugs, and how are they made? I’ll tell you – I speak from experience, having gotten a pair made a few years ago – and I tell you this: when you’re dealing with tinnitus, you want to protect your hearing – especially the tinnitus was caused by exposure to loud noise, like it was for me. Also, tinnitus can be accompanied by hyperacusis, which is an oversensitivity to certain frequencies; some sounds actually hurt, and having a good pair of earplugs was like being given a gift from heaven, no doubt.

As the name implies, custom ear plugs are ear plugs which are molded to your ears and your ears alone. No two pairs are the same; even though there are good, off the shelf, one size fits all or one size fits most ear plugs available, nothing beats custom. Getting a pair begins with assessing your needs, and a trip to an audiologist or hearing center; I got mine made at ListenUP! Canada (with whom I have no affiliation; I’m just a satisfied customer – but you’ll get excellent results with most hearing centers and qualified audiologists).

First, determine what level of hearing protection you need. Most custom ear plugs (if they’re not using “fixed” levels of noise attenuation) have removable, switchable filters that can filter out ten, fifteen, or even as high as thirty decibels. If you work in an only moderately noisy environment, ten to fifteen decibels of noise attenuation will probably suffice. However, if you go to parties, concerts, nightclubs or bars, play electric/amplified instruments, or things like the violin, the flute or the drums, or work in construction or are generally exposed to heavy machinery and other loud environments, a pair of custom ear plugs with twenty five or thirty decibel filters are probably your best bet – and remember, if you get switchable filters at different levels of attenuation, you can always swap out the high powered ones for weaker ones in quiter places where you still need some noise protection.

When you go to the audiologist or hearing center, they will confirm with you what you want. You’ll usually even have a choice of materials. For the most unobtrusive look, I’d suggest plain or flesh colored silicone, but if you want to show off your earplugs or have them stand out, other, much more colorful materials are usually available.

The technician or audiologist will then inject a soft, non-toxic putty type material into each ear, and let it harden before sliding it out. It feels a bit strange, but don’t worry; it’ll be over soon. This forms the mold for your earplugs; this is what makes them custom. They will conform perfectly to the shape of your ear canal, which, apart from the soft silicone or other material used, is why they’re so comfortable.

Then, the earplug mold is sent off (unless it’s done on-site) to the manufacturer, and in a little while, you’ll have your very own set of made-to-measure plugs, along with whatever filters you specified. Yes, having it done this way costs more, but the results are great. I can sleep with mine on, wear them in loud places, and still hear very well. Oh, yeah – that’s another advantage: Usually, custom plugs like this use high quality noise attenuation filters that reduce noise much more evenly across the frequency spectrum than conventional earplugs, which means that sound isn’t so much muffled as it simply seems that someone turned down the volume to a comfortable level all across the board.

If you love hearing, but work or play in loud places, custom ear plugs are an excellent investment to protect your hearing.

Hydrogen peroxide is most commonly used as an over the counter antiseptic to disinfect minor wounds. But did you know that hydrogen peroxide ear wax removal is one commonly used method used to loosen and clear out old ear wax and other debris from clogged ears?

First, a note on safety: Do not attempt the hydrogen peroxide ear wax removal method if you have fluid discharge from the ear, severe ear pain or hearing impairment. Also, it’s not advised if you have highly sensitive skin. In such instances, a normal solution of saline or water is the preferred choice. Now let’s get started!

Find “3 Percent” hydrogen peroxide. All pharmacies should carry this, over the counter. Next, get a hold of some almond oil or olive oil (the latter is easier to find, at any grocery store), some cotton balls, a bulb aspirator (ask at the pharmacy), one eye dropper, two or three bowls, and a towel. Keep all these supplies near a sink with space to work.

Place the hydrogen peroxide and oil of your choosing in a bowl of hot water. Keep them there so they stay warm.

To put the warmed hydrogen peroxide and oil into the ear, tilt your head in a way that the ear which you’ll be treating faces up, to the ceiling. Put two or three drops of oil into the ear, using the eye dropper; pause for two or three minutes, and then, using the eye dropper, add two or three drops of hydrogen peroxide into the same ear. Keep your head in position; you should hear a bubbling noise from the hydrogen peroxide. Wait until the bubbling stops before moving your head.

To avoid staining your shirt, keep a tower on your shoulder and wrapped around your neck.

(If you have impacted earwax, it’s likely that you’ll benefit most from repeating the above procedure. If you do so, keep a cotton ball in the ear to avoid losing the hydrogen peroxide and oil, and perform the same steps three, perhaps four, timers per day.)

Now, after the oil/hydrogen peroxide mixture has sat in the ear, and bubbled away, you’ll have to drain the mixture out. Put warm water in the bulb aspirator; then, angle and tilt your head so that the ear your filled with the hydrogen peroxide and oil mixture is over the sink. Carefully position the tip of the bulb aspirator to forty five degrees; squeeze the bulb gently to push out the warm water into your ear, which flushes out the earwax previously loosened by the mixture described above.

As you can see, hydrogen peroxide earwax removal is one option of treating earwax buildup – we hope this article has helped you!

Since earwax can cause and aggravate tinnitus, Remedies For Tinnitus Now discusses not only ways to treat tinnitus, but also tactics to keep the ears clean and healthy. There are a number of methods to remove excess earwax; one of them, practiced in alternative health circles, is candling ear wax.

How does candling ear wax work – and is it safe?

Ear candles are long, hollow tubes made out of a flammable substance, such as linen or cotton, and beeswax. Beeswax is a fragrant, non-toxic substance that’s used in some of the world’s best candles. The candles are cone shaped.

The candle is inserted through a hole in a specially made plate which catches the ear wax, and is placed in the external ear canal. The practitioner lights the candle at the other end.

Proponents of the practice make the claim that a “low level” vacuum is created, which pulls out ear wax and the debris trapped in it from the inner ear and sinuses. Other claims include that the smoke causes a drying effect, which in turn triggers the natural excretion of dead cells, wax, parasites and other debris.

But are these claims true? According to practitioners and proponents, yes. According to most information available online, no. In fact, critics of ear candling say that the “earwax” found in the candle after is not earwax, but wax from the candle, darkened through heat. So does it work and is it safe? That’s for you to decide. There are undoubtedly many anecdotal successes to read about. (The author, for example, used it when their ear was so clogged full of wax that they could hardly hear out of it. Whatever the procedure actually did, the wax loosened very shortly after, and the author was able to hear again.) If you do decide to try it, make sure you find a practitioner with a good reputation among their clients.

Hopefully this article about candling ear wax will help you decide if it’s right for you.

Earache Remedies

Earaches are most commonly a childhood affliction – but they can affect people of all ages, including those suffering persistent ear infections and tinnitus – or just a plain old bug that’s going around. This article will discuss effective, natural earache remedies.

Earaches just plain hurt. That’s all there is to it; when you, or your child, has one, all that’s wanted is relief. Fortunately, nature has provided an effective arsenal against this in-the-ear nuisance.

What Causes Earaches?

Earaches can be caused by several things, including an infection or allergy, a buildup of earwax, and even improperly aligned teeth or a clenched jaw. Though they are more common among the very young and young, almost any adult that’s experienced a “mature” earache will probably say it was one of the worst pains they’ve ever felt in their life.

Natural Earache Remedies

Good Old Garlic. Ever fragrant, ever tasty…and ever anti-microbial. Using garlic has been shown to soothe a painful earache – if you use it the right way. You can certainly eat it, if you can stomach a clove or two (the same has to be said for those around you!); or you can look for garlic oil capsules, which contain the powerful oil in an easy to swallow form. Should you prefer to get the microbe killing oil right to the source, you may puncture or break the capsules and squeeze the oil directly into the ear canal. Remember to keep your head to one side to allow the oil to run into the affected ear canal, and plug the ear afterward with a cotton ball to keep it from running out! Apply the oil in this manner a few times a day (every three to four hours), for several days; since the garlic is antimicrobial (a natural antibiotic), it will help to disinfect the ear and kill the bacteria causing the earache.

Olive oil: It’s not just for salad dressing! You can warm a small amount of olive oil on a spoon, and slowly pour it into the ear canal. Remember, warm, not hot. The warmth of the oil will feel very soothing to a painfully afflicted ear. As described about the garlic oil above, lay on one side and plug the ear with cotton to keep the oil in place. Repeat as often as once per hour.

Vitamins. Why? With today’s food lacking in nutrients, supplementing with a whole food vitamin provides the body with nutrients it needs to maintain a healthy immune system, which can help prevent, among many other ailments, an earache. Look especially for Zinc, Vitamin B-50 (a B-Complex), and Vitamin E.

Use a hot water bottle: Place it on the side of your face. Make sure it’s not too hot; if the temperature is right, the warmth will soothe, and lessen the pain.

Adjust your lifestyle if necessary. Though this counts as a preventative measure, rather than a treatment for an acute situation, eating well, exercising and getting plenty of sleep (preferably in that order) will go a long way to ensuring a healthy body, mind and immune system.

We hope this summary of earache remedies was of help to you!

Not all cases of earwax buildup require a visit to the doctor. For those who want to attempt it themselves? We suggest the investment into a good ear wax removal kit. Here’s what to look for:

Most doctors will use a large sized syringe with a straight tip to remove wax buildup from the ears. The syringe is filled with warm water and hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide is antiseptic; the warmth of the water helps dissolve the wax). Earwax is stuck the skin of the ear, and the hair inside (which is why it can also cause or aggravate tinnitus). The rapidly moving water, pushed out of the syringe and compressed by the straight tip, helps to soften and loosen it, allowing it to flow out of the ear. It feels great, and many people find they can hear better after; I certainly could when I tried it. After years of clogged ears, it was akin to a nearsighted person putting on the right eyeglasses or contacts for the first time!

The problem with the syringes that doctors use is that their tip is straight. This makes them very hard to use – and possibly unsafe – in a DIY, at-home situation. Please do not attempt to use a straight tipped syringe to remove earwax yourself. Look for an ear wax removal kit whose nozzle is safely angled; it should place the tip of the nozzle in the very front opening of the ear canal, and not farther, when inserted fully. This distance puts it half-way to the eardrum; the tip cannot and should not reach the eardrum (which should not be impacted at all by foreign objects!).

Look for a syringe with a smooth, firm nozzle, for the sake of safety, and one that allows lots of space for draining the water with the bits of broken up earwax. You shouldn’t need any materials other than warm water for filling the syringe.

How To Use An Ear Wax Removal Kit

It’s easy! Take a warm shower. While you’re in the shower, pull out the piston from the syringe; hold the large hole in the syringe under the flowing warm water. Wait until it’s overflowing with water, and put the piston back in place, to trap the water. Hold the syringe so the tip is vertical and angled toward your ear. Make sure you’re removed any air that’s trapped inside.

Put the nozzle into your ear, slowly and carefully, all the way, until it doesn’t go farther. Don’t force it! Holding the syringe with one of your hands, push the piston up firmly and steadily; it should take about ten seconds to empty a full syringe. There shouldn’t be pain, just a comfortable, warm feeling. You’ll feel the ear canal filling with water, and draining. Refill the syringe, and repeat the process, as needed (until your ear is clean). It may take up to ten refills of the ear wax removal kit before the built up earwax is removed.

Earwax Buildup

Did you know that earwax buildup can be a cause of tinnitus? Read on to learn more.

Earwax can build up within the ear. It can form both within the entrance to the ear (where it can be cleaned out easily – and gently! – using cotton swabs or wet tissues – or within the inner ear, which is where it can cause or aggravate tinnitus.

Earwax is referred to as cerumen in medical circles. It’s produced by outer ear canal glads, with the purpose of trapping small particles, including dust, and preventing them from getting to and possibly damaging the delicate eardrum (without which we wouldn’t be able to hear!). Under normal circumstances, earwax dries and falls out of the ear, carrying with it dust or other debris it trapped, safely away from the inner ear.

What Causes Earwax Buildup?

“Impaction” (or, blockage) or earwax can take place when the naturally occurring wax gets pushed too deeply into the ear canal. Earwax buildup due to blockage affects a surprising six percent of individuals, and is the most frequent problem that Ear, Nose and Throat specialists encounter among their patients.

Ironically, a common cause of this impaction is the incorrect use of cotton swabs to clean the ears (as well as other objects). Please do not probe the ear deeply with swabs or anything else. Do not enter the ear canal with them – only gently clean the most open surfaces of the inside of the ear, close to it’s entrance! Otherwise, you can risk pushing the wax in farther, or bumping into the ear drum.

Also, hearing aids, and earbuds or earplugs, if used too frequently, or pushed far into the ear, can cause earwax buildup.

Earwax Symptoms

Symptoms can include the following:

Hearing loss

Dizziness or disorientation

Pain in the ear

A feeling of fullness, stuffiness or being “plugged up”, in the ear

Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)

When Should You Seek Help?

You should go to the doctor if you can’t successfully remove the earwax; if you think you eardrum is damaged from infection, loud noises, physical injury, or rapid changes in pressure, such as deep sea or scuba diving; if your ear begins to seep fluid; if your have ongoing loss of hearing, bad pain, or fever.

You shouldn’t hesitate visiting a hospital if you feel dizzy and have the sensation of spinning or can’t properly walk; if you develop a rapid, high fever or begin to vomit; if hearing loss comes on suddenly.

Remember: Earwax buildup can cause tinnitus, so keep your ears healthy and clean!

Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment

Here at Remedies For Tinnitus Now we outline holistic tinnitus treatments such as homeopathic remedies and herbal treatments, and lifestyle and diet modifications that can help treat tinnitus. But what about a special option that’s small, easy to use, electronic and FDA approved? We were very excited to read about the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment.

Let’s take a closer look.

According to the manufacturer, this method of tinnitus treatment is “non-invasive”, and “easy to use during regular daily activities”. Having looked at it ourselves, it should be, in today’s music loving world, as natural as slipping in a pair of earphones and listening to an MP3. Neuromonics uses an Oasis™ device, which is attached to headphones. The headphones deliver music, designed precisely by Neuromonics, which is embedded with a “pleasant acoustical neural stimulus”. The sounds are customized to the audiological profile of each user, individually – and they stimulate the auditory pathway (ears to acoustic nerve to brain), which encourages neural plastic changes. (We’ve given a “shout out” to the book, “The Brain That Changes Itself”) before; this is another great example of how neural plasticity allows for the healing of different disorders and diseases, including tinnitus. As time passes, continued use of the device help to change the brain and let it remove the disturbance of tinnitus from its audio processing centers, which can provide lasting relief from the irritating noise of tinnitus.

How Long Does the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment Take?

This unique treatment takes roughly six months. While this may sound like quite a while, it’s really not. Remember, it takes time for neural plasticity to evolve a malfunctioning brain state into something better and to solidify it – though some people report almost immediate relief. The treatment process is actually broken down into stages.

Stage 1

Before the treatment is commenced, an audiologist with special Neuromonics Training meets the patient to assess and provide an evaluation of their hearing and tinnitus symptoms and severity. Once an audiological profile is created, treatment options are discussed. If the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment is deemed appropriate, the patient will be fitted with the device; the stimulus it provides is custom tailored to the patient’s “prescription”, based on the assessment, and delivers appropriate “doses” of very relaxing music.

During the first stage, symptom relief is provided, allowing patients to experience a sense of control over their tinnitus, while continuing the treatment process. The device is worn for a minimum of two hours per day, or longer, while the patient is engaged in activities such as preparing food, reading, or doing office work (not while running or driving or otherwise operating machinery, though!). Stage 1 lasts approximately two months.

Stage 2

The purpose of this stage is to allow the brain to form new neural connections which filter out and override the sounds of tinnitus. When this occurs, relief is found, and often continues without even using the device (this means that the new neural connections are not only forming, but solidifying). The device is still used for at least two hours a day, but this is slowly reduced and the annoyance of tinnitus lessens. Stage 2 lasts for approximately four months.

Stage 3: Maintenance

While this isn’t really a “stage” in the sense of treatment, the audiologist who provided the patient with their assessment works with them to create a maintenance program which allows the patient to continue treating their tinnitus on their own. Though some Neuromonics patients do use the device periodically for short periods of time, many find that they do not need to do so, once they’ve undergone the initial treatment and the new connections in the brain have “learned” to cancel out their tinnitus, and solidified.

We’re very excited about the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment, because it’s drug-free, non-surgical, safe and addresses the physiological cause of tinnitus in many cases, with the potential for long term, permanent relief.

Constant Ringing In Ears

You may have been leading a normal life; when you listen to music or go loud places, there’s sound, and your ears perceive it. When you turn off the lights and go to sleep, there’s quiet. But some people may develop constant ringing in the ears. What’s that all about?

Constant Ringing In Ears - better known as “Tinnitus” – is an aggravating condition of the inner ear which can affect those young and old, male and female, rich and poor. While “benign” in the sense that it won’t kill you – it can range in its effects from mild annoyance to severely depressing intensity. It can be a minor distraction, or a major social impediment, even interfering with the ability to concentrate and do work or carry on a normal conversation.

Tinnitus is perceived as a sensation of humming, ringing, chirping, roaring, whooshing, buzzing or hissing – without any external acoustic stimulation.

Did you know that more than 15 million Americans experience tinnitus on a regular basis? How can so many people be suffering from this invisible, yet very audible disorder? According to research, many of the cases of chronic tinnitus in the Western world are based on a degenerative process which is rooted in chronic inflammation. What can be done? Solutions which appropriately modify lifestyle can help – before it’s too late to reverse the process!

When we say “inflammation”, we are, in this case, referring to a number of factors that all result in inflammation in the inner ear and/or damage to the fine, acoustic hairs found within, which respond to stimulus, and translate it into sound via the acoustic nerve to the brain. Causes of tinnitus include ear infections, a buildup of ear wax, Meniere’s disease, a hypo (low) thyroid, allergies (and the side effects of medications commonly used to treat them), exposure to loud noise, and on rare occasions, a tumor, such as an acoustic neuroma. Did you know that more than two hundred and fifty medications include tinnitus as a listed side effect?

People suffering from the symptom of ringing ears, associated hearing loss, whooshing, humming or other sounds want a tinnitus cure. Understandably so! By all means – see a doctor. However, surgery is probably not a good option for most patients. Explore holistic methods and treatment options, including basic lifestyle modifications. Do you stress a lot? Try to stress less. Are you sedentary? If you don’t have a condition which precludes you from physical exercise, consider taking up a physical activity. Is your diet poor? Making changes that incorporate cleaner, whole, organic foods and plenty of water can make a difference!

Remedies for tinnitus are within your reach. Please don’t give up; there are solutions. Dealing with constant ringing in ears doesn’t have to take up your time.

Home Remedies For Tinnitus

Dealing with tinnitus is no picnic; believe me, I’ve been there. So what do you do when you’ve got a ringing in the ears, you have no supplements, no doctors are around, and you just want to get rid of the problem?

Consider home remedies for tinnitus.

For thousands of years, people have used what we consider “household” substances to treat all manner of ills. This article will discuss home remedies for tinnitus that are safe, and may be effective as either a quick treatment, or a long term plan, depending on one’s response to them.

Apple Cider Vinegar: Ah yes; apple cider vinegar, or “ACV” is practically a cure-all. Try a tablespoon in water a few times a day.

Blackstrap Molasses: It’s not only sweet, but there are anecdotal reports of this tasty substance relieving the ringing-in-the-ears noise of tinnitus. It’s suspected that the high mineral content of blackstrap molasses may help people who are anemic (low in iron), or otherwise mineral deficient; nutritional deficiencies can result in tinnitus.

Water: Water is absolutely critical to life. All life. Period. No water means no life. Is it surprising, then, that some sufferers have found relief merely by “chugging” (as one person put it) water? The causes of tinnitus are diverse; in the case of allergies, toxicity or dehydration, water may help address the issues and bring relief – and even temporary relief from tinnitus is a good thing.

Flax Seed and/or Psyllium Seed: The most obvious thing about these substances is their high fiber content. Some speculate that helping constipation may also help tinnitus. The reason? Constipation increases blood pressure, which may increase tinnitus; it also causes stress, which can result in an increased noise level or perception of ear ringing. See here for an article on tinnitus stress. Also, flax seeds are high in essential fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory and overall health giving properties.

Garlic: Okay – garlic stinks – but if you’re the one eating it, it’s delicious. One woman from Wisconsin notes that taking a garlic extract eliminated a decade of horrible tinnitus practically overnight. Her theory? She had a persistent ear infection, which, as we note here can be a cause of tinnitus. Garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic, and when it killed her ear infection, the tinnitus that went with it was gone.

Changing Your Diet: A change in diet, eliminating toxic foods, allergens and foods incompatible with your metabolism and constitution can do wonders for your health, and that includes tinnitus. When we eat a healthy, clean diet, stress levels drop and allergies reduce. Healing occurs more easily; the ringing in your ears may reduce as a result.

This article has effectively outline what are, for some, inexpensive and efficacious home remedies for tinnitus – now get out there and try them!
